Update broke the site?

Contact Form 7 update broke your forms? Fix it step by step

A form that silently stops sending is worse than one that shows an error. Check these points in order.

Fix it now

Get the site working again

  1. Don’t panic and don’t update anything else. If the site is down for visitors, restore the last backup or roll back the plugin first; find the cause afterwards.
  2. Check the PHP version. Compare the “Requires PHP” line on the plugin’s WordPress.org page with your site’s PHP version (Tools → Site Health → Info → Server). If PHP is older, the update cannot install or can fail; ask your host to upgrade PHP first.
  3. Send a test message and check the mail log of your SMTP plugin. Many “broken forms” are mail delivery, not the form.
  4. Check the spam protection (reCAPTCHA or similar) still works with the new version.

Why it happens

The usual causes

PHP too old

The new version needs a newer PHP than the site runs.

Spam protection changes

Integrations with reCAPTCHA and similar services change between versions.

Mail delivery

The form works, but the email never arrives because of mail settings.

Cached form pages

Cached pages can serve outdated form tokens.

Next time

Checklist before the next update

  • Check the required PHP version first
  • Make a backup
  • Run the update on a copy
  • Submit every important form on the copy
  • Confirm the email arrives
  • Then update live

How Verploy handles it

Test the next update before your clients see it

Every update is checked, and the risky ones are tested on a copy of the site first. Verploy compares the key pages on desktop and mobile, submits the forms and opens the checkout. If something looks off, the update is held back and the live site stays as it was. If a problem only shows after going live, Verploy attempts an automatic rollback and reports the result.
